Exercises

Purpose

Exercises (including drills) are an opportunity to combine individual skills together with other operators to achieve team results and demonstrate readiness for a real event. Some individual practice may occur. But individual practice is better accomplished at practice sessions.

Exercises usually involve taking action to address a specific scenario during a pre-defined operating period. Other agencies may be involved. So, participants are encouraged to practice and hone their individual skills before coming to an exercise. That way, their efforts during the exercise can concentrate on applying their individual skills to support partner agencies and to deal with the scenario presented.

Credential Evaluations

Evaluations for the Credentialing Program are offered whenever and wherever the activity is conducive to evaluations and evaluators are available. Note that some types of events don't lend themselves to evaluations, and others may limit the types of evaluations we can offer.

Availability

The above table summarizes when credential evaluations will be available.

  • If we know in advance that evaluations will be offered at an exercise, we'll indicate the evaluation types in the table above.
  • If we know in advance that evaluations will not be offered at an exercise, the word "No" will appear in the table above. This is usually because the activity itself is not conducive to conducting evaluations.
  • If we'd like to offer evaluations at an exercise but we haven't yet lined up the staff to do it, the word "Tentative" will appear in the table above, along with the types of evaluations we're hoping to provide. Check back later.

Sign-Up

The method for requesting an evaluation may differ, depending on the complexity of the event.

  • Separate Sign-Ups
    • At larger activities, such as the annual full-scale communication exercise, you will usually see a separate position listed for evaluations.
    • Simply select the right position when signing up.
  • Combined Sign-Ups
    • At smaller activities, where the total number of operators (eval or not) is limited, you will usually see "(with eval option)" next to the position names.
    • In this case, sign up for the position and also contact the Credentialing Program Manager
