County-wide Communications Exercise and SET

Date: 10/27/18 Start: 8:00 AM End: 5:00 PM Location: Moffett Field (tentative)
MAC Credit (What's this?): Yes

Purpose:  This is our annual large-scale, county-wide communications exercise.  It is intended to exercise individuals, teamwork and equipment.  We will offer activities for field communicators, net controls, packet operators and shadows.  Individual equipment and the county communications trailer equipment will be used.  MAC evaluations for advanced qualifications will be available.

Note:  SET = Simulated Emergency Test, an annual ARRL activity.

Primary Scenario:  This year we plan to integrate with the county-wide CERT drill, similar to what was done in 2016.  CERT teams will be conducting searches, surveys and other activities within simulated neighborhoods and report back to their simulated neighborhood incident command posts.  Amateur radio will provide communications between the incident command posts and the simulated EOC.

The CERT group has not yet selected individuals to perform the key roles of Incident Commander and general staff.  They expect to define their management team by July 17th.  If unable to do so, they may not have enough time to plan the drill.

Alternate Scenario:  If the CERT group is unable to select their management team in time to plan their part of the drill, we will still conduct our own drill.   So, the drill date is firm, but the drill activity and location may change.  For example, we might conduct a team-based exercise, similar to what we did in 2017, or a more varied, individual-focused exercise, like we did in previous years.  Both options were popular.  And, in either case, we'll switch it up a bit to keep things interesting.

Sign-ups:  As soon as we know for sure which scenario we're going with, we'll post the specific roles and open up sign-ups.  In the meantime, reserve the date on your calendar and plan to attend.  It will be a fun and challenging experience either way.
