Annual Los Gatos Children's Holiday Parade

The 63rd annual Los Gatos Children’s Christmas Holiday Parade will be held on Saturday,  December 7, 2019 in downtown Los Gatos, rain or shine. The parade starts at 11:00a and ends at approximately 1:30p.

Again, this year, Los Gatos-Saratoga Recreation, LG Lions Club, and the LG/MS PD have asked the LG/MS ARES-RACES group to provide a cadre of hams for help in providing communications during the parade in case of emergencies, as well as to help locate lost parents, children, and dogs.

This is an easy way to help out the community, enjoy the parade (over 200 "floats", and put a smile on all of us “kids”).

We would like to field a team of ARES Ham operators for this event. We usually have an equal number from Los Gatos/Monte Sereno and from other parts of Santa Clara County.  The positions include Incident Control, Planner, Logistics, Operations, Net Control, Scribe, and Rover.

You will need a hand-held ham radio (5W output + spare battery). A better antenna than the standard “rubber ducky” is recommended. Wear an ARES or similar bright green vest and dress in layers as it is likely to be cold in the morning but may warm up. While it may rain, it has only once in 61 years.

The streets will be closed at 9:00a so parking becomes a challenge as the morning progresses. Our Incident Command Post will be at the Town Plaza (corner of Main St and N. Santa Cruz Ave). In addition, we will have pop up tents with chairs, water, etc. on the grass outside for radio operations. Be sure to arrive before 10:00a. Allow extra time due to need to find parking.

We will gather at the Incident Command Post (ICP) location at 10:00a for a briefing and confirmation of assignments.

Have your radios programmed for the following frequencies: 

* Resource Net = W6PIY 2m: 147.390 MHz, + offset, PL 151.4 Hz.  Resource net will be active by 9:00a for those who wish to checkin when leaving home.  Be sure to start your ICS-214 and 309 when you leave home. Best to bring them on a clipboard.

* Primary Message Net (Parade 1) = 441.000 MHz (LG/MS Tac3). Optional PL 88.5 Hz when transmitting. Once you arrive at the ICP, you should sign in on the ICS-211, and switch to this Message Net.

* Secondary Message Net (Parade 2) = 146.595 MHz (LG/MS Tac2). Optional PL 88.5 Hz when transmitting. Used when Message Net 1 is not available.

* Tertiary Message Net (Parade 3) = 147.480 MHz (LG/MS Tac1). Optional PL 88.5 Hz when transmitting. Used when Message Nets 1 & 2 are not operational.
