23rd Sea Otter Classic 4/19-4/21 (times vary)

Date: 04/21/13 Start: 9:00 AM End: 9:00 AM Location: Fort Ord - Monterey County
Credential Credit (What's this?): No

The 23rd Sea Otter Classic will be held on April 18-21, 2013.  Help from amateur radio operators has been a vital resource for communication in the Fort Ord National Monument back country and recently the Gran Fondo (“Great Endurance”) Giro d’Italia Carmel Valley Route.  The Sea Otter Classic attracts over 9,000 athletes and over 55,000 spectators.  The areas where we assist have little or no cellular or repeater coverage.  It is an excellent opportunity for demonstration and practice of emergency communications and help build readiness for a real disaster.

This year help will be needed for the following times:

Friday 4/19 – Back Country Support – Noon to 6:00 PM

Saturday 4/20 – Back Country Support – 11 AM to 5 PM

Saturday 4/20 – Gran Fondo Carmel Valley Route Support – 6 AM to 4 PM

Saturday 4/20 – Back Country Support – Night Ride – 6 PM to 11 PM

Sunday 4/21 – Gran Fondo Back Country Support – 9 AM to 4 PM

Camping is available directly from the event or we have the option of camping for no charge in the Laguna Seca paddock if we have enough interested people.  Perhaps we can arrange for a pot luck picnic one or two of the evenings as well.

We’re working on many process changes that will better integrate us with the other teams providing support and let everyone focus on their specialties.  Thus ham operators will be primarily working radios and may include both ham radios and commercial/public safety radios  (i.e. You may be asked to coordinate on the medical channel to guide in an ambulance while the medic provides care).  This will give us the advantage of not having to double up just to make sure we don’t have a ham out there alone, but we will still pair experienced hams with new hams as needed.  First aid and course marshal support will be provided by BETA (Bicycle Equestrian Trails Assistance) and National Ski Patrol as in the past.

Please let me know as soon as possible if you’re interested in volunteering.  Also, include if you’re interested in the camping and/or pot luck idea.  Eventually we’ll need a volunteer wavier signed and we will have more details available closer to the event.

Please note that the times and details are subject to change, but we will keep you updated if you volunteer.  Please keep in mind that end times are estimates.  In most cases the event will end earlier, but if we have a major incident, demobilization may go much later.

Thanks & 73,
