Packet Operations - Level 1, Part A

Course Description and Class Handouts

 

Overview: This is the first course in a two part series designed to prepare an individual to assemble and operate and existing packet station. Part A covers the overall county packet network architecture and the various components of a county baseline packet station. Part B is a hands-on class focused on configuring and using the county baseline packet station.
Intended Audience: Hams with experience in emergency communications who are interested in performing Packet Operator duties.
Prerequisites: Valid Technician Class or higher Amateur Radio license
Length: 3 hours
Students should bring:
  • Copy of course handouts
  • Pen/pencil and pad of paper
Learning Objectives:

At the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Define the role of the packet operator
  • Explain what packet radio is and why we use it
  • Set up and operate a county baseline packet station
  • Perform set up operations of a Kantronics KPC-3+ TNC
  • Understand the use of Outpost and PacFORMS
  • Properly document and log all activities
