INTRODUCTION TO PACKET RADIO
and its intended use in the county for emergency services.

If packet is new to you, then this class is for you. If you are comfortable with packet, this class is still for you! We will start off with the basics of sending a message digitally using Outpost, the county's preferred packet manager application. From there, we will start "looking under the covers" to see how everything works, from configuring Outpost properly to some of the details of both hardware and software TNCs. This class will be led by Jim Clark N6JRC (AEC Los Altos).

Proposed Agenda (subject to change):

  1. What is packet radio, why is it important and what are the major components?
  2. What is a BBS and how does it work?
  3. An introduction to Outpost and its capabilities
  4. Sending and receiving basic messages using Outpost
  5. More Outpost send and receive options
  6. PacForms - what are they and how to use them
  7. TNC configurations - Kantronics (hardware), Rascal and SignalLink (soundcard TNCs)

The last day for sign-up will be 1/28/08.
